Well, the ruling has come through, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ruled in favour of setting up a way to establish “Pick and Pay” or “Pick a Pack” options when subscribing to cable.
My understanding is that by December 2016 you can purchase basic cable which would consist of local stations, mandatory channels, and educational channels for $25 a month with the option of up to four American “affiliate” channels available as well. From here you no longer have to pick a package, if you want a certain channel you can pay to have that specific channel as opposed to being forced into an entire package.
Packages will still be available too, so if you’ve got one you love then you’ll still be able to enjoy all the channels within it.
For myself I know that I watch T.V., and have been watching television shows more than movies lately just because they take up less time in my day. I can watch a half an hour show and continue on with my day, whether it be heading off to coaching or to cover an event. Movies take up a larger chunk of time at once and although I enjoy movies I often find that I don’t have time to sit for that long at one time. Movies usually lose their magic if you have to watch them in separate parts too.
Currently I don’t have cable, I watch Netflix. With the amount I watch T.V. I just didn’t think that the cost of having the service was worth it, especially when I just want certain channels. Having to be tied into an entire package seemed like a waste because you were essentially paying that large amount to really only watch a channel or two out of the package.
I’m excited to see how this develops into the future because I miss watching the news at suppertime and my roommate told me the other day he doesn’t mind not having cable but misses Jeopardy. It’s a show you can’t find on Netflix nor can you find it online to watch. I can understand where he’s coming from because that was actually one of my favourite shows to watch as well.
I personally think this is an awesome idea and always wondered why it wasn’t an option. Even as a kid there was a show I used to watch on an American network, but it was a part of a package my parents decided to stop getting. So, the T.V. show I was watching was no more, and I questioned them why we couldn’t still get the one channel, that it was silly to pay for all the others, but that one channel I liked.
That was when they kind of explained packages and how everything works with cable. I was old enough to understand, but still thought it was silly to have to purchase all of these channels just because you wanted a single one.
So, to me this was an inevitable change that was simply going to take time and it is something that will actually make me consider purchasing cable from a service provider as opposed to simply watching internet streamed videos on Netflix or Crackle.
