The Weyburn Care-A-Van Society received a new bus on Aug. 28, and put it into service immediately, while the former bus was taken in as a trade.
The bus is the only publicly-owned wheelchair mobility service in Weyburn, including a lift, and the society also operates a van with a ramp that is available for rentals.
The van can be used for things like Regina trips, attending weddings and other special family occasions, and can be rented by the hour or the day, or longer, and may be driven by a family member or friend.
The bus comes with a driver, and stays within a small radius of Weyburn.
The new bus was purchased from Crestline Coach of Saskatoon, and cost $93,000. It has a capacity of three wheelchairs and six seated passengers.
The funding for the bus came from a provincial government grant of $55,000, $25,000 from the Legion’s Poppy Fund, along with donations from the Goeres family, Valleyview Petroleum and two private donors.
The Care-A-Van Society was started in 1980, and is supported by several member agencies, including the Weyburn Rotary Club, Quota International of Weyburn, the Weyburn Legion, Knights of Columbus, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Young Fellows Club, the Kinsmen Club and the City of Weyburn.
These sponsors help with funding to maintain and operate the bus and van every year.
