Weyburn Red Wing forward, Rodney Cowie, had his best SJHL game Sunday night as he scored four of the Wings' seven goals over the Nipawin Hawks.
The grueling three-game/ three-night road swing saw the Weyburn team score 15 goals over three nights. Those goals however gave the Wings only one victory in a decisive 7-1 win over the Nipawin Hawks Sunday night.
Rodney Cowie netted four goals and an assist Sunday night along with Drew George, Keegan Bruce and Brock Appleyard each adding to the scoring bonanza in Nipawin.
Wings' netminder Mitch Kilgore turned away 34 shots to help seal the win.
Pair of goals each period, not enough for win in Melfort
The Weyburn Red Wings had the firepower Saturday night but were bested by the Melfort Mustangs with a 9-6 win in front of their hometown crowd.
The Mustangs had two powerplay and two shorthanded goals Saturday night to help propel them to their victory.
Weyburn had a pair of powerplay goals of their own late in the first period by Scott Kirkham to help keep the scoring even in the first period.
Brock Appleyard, Keegan Bruce, Jesse Ross and Jackson Schneider would help add to the scoreboard for Weyburn.
It looked like the shootout at the O.K. Corral with the Mustangs scoring nine goals against veteran netminder Mitch Kilgore.
Ice Wolves net five for win Friday night
Weyburn started the three-day drive with a 5-2 loss against the top dog LaRonge Ice Wolves with Clint Pirio and Drew George netting Weyburn's only two goals. Meanwhile Wings' netminder Riley Hengen was charged with Friday night's loss.
Despite the two losses on the road the Weyburn Red Wings proved that they could mount an effective scoring drive against some of the best clubs in the SJHL.
The Wings hosted the Melville Millionaires Wednesday night as part of a makeup game where the Millionaires had to cancel in November because of team illness. Due to printing deadlines, results were unavailable at press time.
The Kindersley Klippers are at Crescent Point Place Friday night and then the Flin Flon Bombers are in town Saturday night to take on the Weyburn Red Wings.
As January draws to a close every game now becomes important to the Wings in their hunt for a playoff spot. With eight games remaining in February the Wings are well aware of what needs to be done and with a strong hometown crowd supporting them at these games, this would help bolster the local SJHL club's run.
