The Weyburn Red Wings traveled to Yorkton Saturday in hopes of starting the 2010-11 regular season off with a road victory.
But that wasn't in the cards as the Yorkton Terriers easily handled the Wings in a 5-2 contest, which took two hours to conclude.
Weyburn would jump onto the scoreboard first when Bruce Reegan took a pass from Justin Dalebozik to make it a 1-0 contest.
Yorkton's Robbie Ciolfi then knotted the scoring for the Terriers at the 7:12 mark of the opening period.
Weyburn would take a 2-1 lead midway through the second period just seconds after Yorkton had successfully killed off a penalty when Wings Shawn Cowie found the back of the Terriers net, with assists being awarded to Ryan Whitell and Reegan.
Weyburn found themselves on the defensive end of business once again early in the final period when they were two men short for assorted on-ice sins.
Yorkton took advantage of this with Zak Matkowski and Drew McDermott scoring early in the third period on the power play making it a 3-2 Yorkton advantage.
Terriers Clarke Breitkrenz and Riley Paterson would then put a halt to any Wings hopes of a victory midway through the final period by scoring their respective goals.
The Wings will have plenty of time to knock the rust off their game before entertaining their hometown crowd, as they have two road games in Flin Flon, Manitoba over the weekend along with a road game September 28 in Notre Dame. The Wings will be on the road again in early October with games in Battlefords, Humboldt and Kindersley before their home opener against Estevan Friday,October 8th. The Wings will also play host to the Bombers Saturday, October 9 at Crescent Point Place where hopefully construction will be completed on the new front entrance/ lobby to the Weyburn arena.
