Weyburn Red Wings post pair of wins over Melville

The Weyburn Red Wings claimed two wins by sweeping the home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires over the weekend.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Red Wings claimed two wins by sweeping the home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires over the weekend.

They won at home on Friday by the score of 4-1, and then in Melville on Saturday in overtime by the score of 5-4.

In the home game, the Red Wings’ Ryley Morgan opened scoring 46 seconds into the start of the game, assisted by Ty Mason and Jackson Hassman, the Hassman scored only 15 seconds later, with Mason getting his second assist.

The Red Wings were able to hold off the Millionaires through four power plays, including a two-man advantage in the first period.

There was no scoring in the second period, then Mason got his turn to score, assisted by Morgan, about five minutes into the third.

Melville scored on the powerplay, then Jakob Kalin scored unassisted to clinch the win.

Dazza Mitchell was between the pipes for the full 60 minutes, stopping 23 of the 24 shots taken on net.

In Saturday’s game, Melville opened the scoring, then Weyburn responded with two quick goals, with Blake Norris scoring from Matthew Reidy and Max Monette, then about a minute later, Morgan scored from Hassman and Mason.

Melville scored the only goal of the second period to tie the game, then they took the lead with two goals in the third.

The Red Wings’ Blake Betson scored from Elijah Anderson and Monette, and Monette tied the game back up on assists by Reidy and Lucas Jeffreys.

The winning goal at 4:29 of overtime was scored by Morgan, his second of the game, on Reidy’s third assist. Monette was named the game’s first star for scoring a goal and getting two assists.

Mitchell was again in net for the full 64 minutes of play, stopping 31 of the 35 shots taken on the goal.

The Red Wings host the Kindersley Klippers on Tuesday night, then will see Melfort visit on Friday night, Jan. 27, and the Klippers are back again on Saturday, Jan. 28, with all games starting at 7 p.m.
