The Weyburn Red Wings dropped two games over the weekend, with both games creating some third period problems for the Wings.

This means that the Wings have now fallen to under .500 in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with their season standings at 11 wins, 12 losses and one shootout loss. This record places them fourth in the Sherwood division of the league.

During game action against the Klippers on Friday, the Red Wings fell 4-2 in Kindersley. They had started with a 2-1 lead in the first period, with goals from Brock Appleyard at 0:58, assisted by Drew George and Jens Johnson; and Rodney Cowie at 7:54, assisted by Scott Kirkham and Shawn Cowie.

The Klippers scored one goal in the first, then tied the game with another goal in the second. They had then taken the victory by scoring two additional goals in the third, while preventing the Red Wings from scoring any more.

In net for the loss was Mitch Kilgore, who stopped 22 out of 26 attempts.

Then facing against the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday, the Red Wings fell 5-3. They had another close start against the opposing team, and were tied 2-2 after two periods.

Appleyard scored an unassisted goal at 16:15 in the first period, tying the game after the Battlefords had scored a power play goal. In the second period, the North Stars found the back of the net early, with R. Cowie tying the game for Weyburn at 8:40, assisted by TJ Wees.

Things continued to stay close between the teams in the third period, then Battleford scored at 18:15 to take a one-goal lead. In the last minute of action, Weyburn pulled their goaltender to attempt to tie the game, and the North Stars took advantage of the empty net to win the game. This was Kilgore's second night in the net and he stopped 35 out of 39 attempts.

The Red Wings will have to reschedule a game against the Melville Millionaires that had been scheduled for Nov. 16. After the flu bug hit the Millionaires, several of their players had been hospitalized and were unable to play.

Upcoming action for the Red Wings include heading to Yorkton on Thursday, Nov. 25 for a game against the Terriers; hosting Estevan on Saturday, Nov. 27 and Kindersley on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Both home games are at Crescent Point Place and start at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League showcase has also been announced, and this year it will be hosted in Weyburn from Dec. 3 to 5.
