Weyburn pickleball player wins gold at provincials

WEYBURN – Weyburn pickleball player Deana Mainil came home with two gold medals and a bronze from the Saskatchewan Provincial Pickleball Championships, held on April 29-30 and May 1 at the Queen City Pickleball Hub in Regina. There were 260 players registered.

Mainil played Women's Singles 3.5 Category on Friday. The format was double knockout with each match being the best of three games to 11, winning by two.

In the first match versus Michelle Chartier from Saskatoon, she won two games straight. In the second match, against Christine Curtis from Brandon, Man., Mainil again won two games straight.

Her third match was against Marcia Jackson from Saskatoon, she won two games straight.

The fourth match put her up against Marcia Jackson from Saskatoon again as she worked her way back up on the B Side. Mainil won two straight with scores of 12-10 and 11-9, earning the gold medal.

Mainil played Women's Doubles, in the 4.0 category, on Saturday with her sister Angie Chatlain from Saskatoon. The format was a round robin with one game to 15, winning by two points.

The pair won their first match versus Becky Stuve of B.C. and Erika Tuza of Regina, by the score of 15-6.

In the second match, they faced Debbie Sluser and Jane Powel of Regina, and they won 15-3.

The third match saw them go up against Zsuzsa Papp and Marcia Jackson of Saskatoon, and they won 15-4.

The sisters’ fourth match was versus Carrie Irwin and Chris Ng of Calgary, and they suffered their first loss by 15-8.

As three of the five teams each had only one loss, the totals made for the day were calculated and Mainil and Chatlain ended up with the gold medal.

On Sunday, Mainil played mixed doubles 4.5 and above, which is the highest level at provincials, with partner David Hesje from Elbow, Sask.

Their first match was against Jeannine Mckinna of Regina and Roger Tynes of Manitoba, and they won 15-7.

The second match was versus Anna Dyachenko of Regina and Phil Greenwood of Kisbey, and they lost 15-1.

Their third match was against Pam and David Clarke of Regina Beach, and the pair lost 15-9.

Their fourth match was versus Marilyn Barrington and Lloyd Rey of Saskatoon, and they won 15-3, leading the pair to capture the bronze medal.

Tim Sidloski and Brenda Milatz from Weyburn also competed in Mixed Doubles and they captured bronze.

Others from Weyburn who participated in provincials were Vicki Betker and Jacquie Williams, Melanie McFadden, Darcy Sidloski and Marcie Benson.
