WEYBURN – Two Weyburn hockey players, Rayna Hennie and Addison Greve, helped their midget girls team, the Regina Rebels, to win the league championship on Friday, and will have the chance to advance to the national Esso Cup championship later this spring.
The Rebels finished in first place in the U18 AAA Female league with a record of 25-5, and their record earned them a bye in the first round of league playoffs.
In the second round, they defeated the Notre Dame Hounds two games to one, with scores of 9-2 on March 18, a loss of 2-1 on March 19, and then the series win by 1-0 on March 21 in Regina.
They then moved on to the league finals against the Saskatoon Stars, losing the first game 5-3 on March 26.
They rebounded in game 2 on March 28, winning 3-1, and the third and deciding game on Friday night saw the Rebels win 6-0 to capture the 2023 provincial title.
The Rebels will now take on the Winnipeg Ice on April 7-9 in Regina, with the winner advancing to the Esso Cup national championship in Prince Albert on April 24-29.
Addison, the daughter of Trisha and Bruce Greve, plays on left wing, and Rayna, daughter of Twyla Marr and Ryan Hennie, plays defence.
Addison played in 27 games, and scored 13 goals with 12 assists, while Rayna played in 30 games, getting one goal and four assists.
