The Weyburn Comprehensive School senior girl's volleyball team earned gold medals at the "5A" Provincial Championships in North Battleford on November 19 and 20. This is the third time in the past four years that the girls have accomplished this feat.
The girl's were the gold medal winners over Prince Albert Carlton, defeating them in two out of three matches with scores of 25-23, 13-25, and 25-14.
The girls had an overall record in the tournament of six and zero. Three of those six matches went to the third set, including both the semi-final against Moose Jaw Peacock and the final against Carlton.
Top Hitters were Alyssa Kimber, Anita Lazurko, and Ciara Wallin with Kill percent's of 52, 52 and 46 percent, respectively. Starlet Peterson led all hitters with 64 actual kills,
Top Servers were Alyssa Kimber (96 percent), Starlet Peterson (95 percent), Ciara Wallin (94 percent) and Anita Lazurko (91 percent), with the entire team averaging a season high of 91 percent.
Top Passers were Taylor Verbeurgt (2.44), Anita Lazurko (2.26), Starlet Peterson (2.22) and Taylor Molde (2.12) for a season high team average of 2.22.
Top Blockers were Anita Lazurko with 23 Stuffs and 24 Rejects, Alyssa Kimber with nine stuffs and 12 Rejects and April Hoffman with eight Stuffs and 11 Rejects.
Ciara Wallin had 164 assists in a well-oiled, efficient offensive effort, scoring many times with a fast-paced attack against a much bigger team from Prince Albert Carlton.
"The girls played with intensity, determination and just an unbelievable effort against a very strong field of teams at this year's Provincial championships," said Coach Al Kimber.
Kimber said the win was the result of a team effort, with everyone stepping up to the plate and delivering a fantastic effort and some amazing defence.
