WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles volleyball teams had a busy weekend, with the Junior A girls hosting a tournament, the senior boys competing in Regina and the senior girls were in Saskatoon.

The senior boys volleyball took action in Regina this past weekend in a 16-team tournament hosted by Winston Knoll.

The boys had some highs and lows and finished with a 3-2 record at the end of pool play. However, they got on a hot streak in the playoffs, defeating Saskatoon St. Joseph, Saskatoon Bethlehem, and the host team Winston Knoll, all in two sets.

This lined them up against Martin Collegiate in the gold medal game. The boys played against them in pool play and lost in a split, so a rematch was in order. The boys lost two close sets 22-25 and 21-25 in the final.

“The boys got in a great rhythm on Saturday, but by the time the final had come, they had already played five matches to Martin’s three that day,” said coach Cory Olson.

“They started to run out of gas against the fresher Martin team, but they battled hard and it was still an exciting final. They definitely showed this weekend that they can compete with the top 5A teams in the province.”

Next boys next action is the Oct. 21-22 weekend in Moose Jaw where they will play in another 16-team tournament.

Meanwhile, both of the Junior A girls teams ended up finishing as the top two team in the B Pool of their home tournament over the weekend, played at the Cugnet Centre.

Team Taylor Swift ended up finishing first in the B side Pool and Team Justin Bieber finished second.

The Junior “A” team was divided into the two squads so they could get more playing time over the weekend.

The WCS Senior Girls played at the St. Joseph’s 12-team tournament in Saskatoon over the weekend. The Eagles finished fourth in their pool just missing the playoff round.

The WCS Sr. B girls played in Radville on Saturday. The Eagles lost both round-robin games and did not make the playoff round.
