Weyburn Comp girls finish second in Swift Current tourney

The Weyburn Comp Eagles Sr. Girls volleyball team had another successful weekend of tournament play, as they traveled to Swift Current to play in the Arden Invitational.

The Weyburn Comp Eagles Jr. A girls volleyball team came home with gold from Moosomin, after beating Carnduff in the finals on Saturday. The team includes, in the back row from left, Ryann Fleck, Sophie Pollock, Katie Swayze, Nelleke Vogel, Eden Tochor, Karis Gerle and coach Bryan Fleck. WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles Sr. Girls volleyball team had another successful weekend of tournament play, as they traveled to Swift Current to play in the Arden Invitational.

The Eagles finished with a record of two wins and one loss. The Eagles topped Estevan in their opening match 15-25, 25-11, then lost a tough match to Swift Current Intermediate 20-25, 18-25, and rounded out the pool play with a win over Lumsden Sr. team 25-16 and 25-20.

After pool play the Eagles were seeded third, moving into the playoff round. WCS played Winston Knoll Collegiate from Regina in a tight three-set matchup.

The Wolverines took the first match 27-25. The Eagles rebounded in the second set to win 25-23 and took the third and deciding match 17-15.

The Eagles then faced Lumsden Jr. team in the semi-final. The Eagles came out on top 25-22 and 25-14, resulting in a match up in the final against host Swift Current.

The Eagles held their own with a solid first set; however, a solid Ardens team took the first set, 25-20. The Ardens rounded out the game with a 25-14 win over the Eagles.

The second-place finish give the Eagles a positive look for their next weekend when they host the 5A Regional tournament at WCS on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11. The Eagles will be playing at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The WCS Eagles Junior A girls competed in a six-team tournament and ended up in first place in their pool after beating Carnduff in three sets, and Whitewood.

The girls beat Moosomin in the semi-finals.

The team then played their best match of the tournament and beat Carnduff in the final, by scores of 25-14 and 25-13, to win gold.

The junior volleyball teams will also be taking part in district playoffs this week as well. The Grade 7 girls are at the Comp hosting in the Eagle gym today, Nov. 8, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The Jr. B girls are in Rocanville and the Jr. A girls will be in Estevan, while the Jr. Boys are in Ogema.
