WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles football team won the SHSAA 5A Provincial Championship on Saturday afternoon in convincing fashion, winning for the first time at home at Darold Kot Field, by the score of 35-15 over the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears.

The Eagles set the tone right away, with a huge run by Isaiah Sanderson on the opening kickoff, followed shortly after by a touchdown, and then with a second touchdown a few minutes later.

At the half the score was 28-1 for Weyburn, with the Bears able to score a couple of touchdowns in the second half.

Their first drive saw a few penalties by the Eagles that took them down the field before they scored their first major, and the second drive saw a series of successful offensive plays by the Bears in the fourth quarter.

Weyburn responded with one more touchdown to cinch the score at 35-15.

Head coach Jody Kerr was doused with Gatorade on the sidelines about two and a half minutes before the end of the game.

Cathy Morrow of the SHSAA was on hand to present the silver plaque and medals to the Bears, and then the gold medals and provincial championship trophy to the Eagles.

Weyburn coach Darren Abel helped her with the presentations to both teams, as this was his final game as a coach for the Eagles.
