The Eagles took part in a moment of silence and family presentation for a student who passed away recently that was connected to the football team in Swift Current. Players from both teams wore a special decal on their helmets for the game in honor of the student from SCCHS.
The game saw the Eagles jump out to a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdowns from Ben Michel and Austin Knupp, and a field goal from Conner Kerr. Swift Current scored their first touchdown early in the second quarter to cut the lead at 17-7.
Two plays later, Ben Manning connected with Kerr for a 70-yard catch and run to extend the lead again. Manning and Xander Shane later added touchdowns as the Eagles came away with the 46-21 win.
Shout outs to Evan Davis with an interception; Ben Manning, who added an interception and threw for 198 yards; Austin Knupp, Ben Michel and Xander Shane combined for over 220 yards rushing; and Conner Kerr had a 174-yard receiving performance.
“The season is going great, and the team is working well together,” said quarterback Manning. “We are now looking to prepare for the playoffs and get ready for the finals.”
“I haven’t played on a team like this one in a way,” said offensive and defensive lineman Parker Thompson. “It is good that we are all coming together and playing well.”
“We want to close off the season with a win, obviously. I am sure that there will be lots of people there,” said Thompson.
“I have felt that our team has done pretty good this season so far, we have come together as a team,” said running back Knupp. “Our last game of the season should be a big one, and I hope we can come away with another win.”
“We haven’t been an undefeated team in a while, so it is an awesome feeling,” said quarterback Michel. “We have a great group of guys, who all combined are really good and we really like each other.”
The Eagles now sit alone in first place with a 5-0 record. The Eagles will host Moose Jaw Peacock for a Friday Night Lights game on October 22 on the WMF field at 6 p.m.
Looking ahead to the playoffs, the players estimate that they will face up against Yorkton in the first round. “We will just have to bring our best game, both offensively and defensively,” noted Manning.
“Yorkton has always been a pretty good team, they are big, strong and fast and that is what you need in a football game,” said Thompson. “It will be a good game.”
“We have a special Friday Night Lights game, which we never regularly have, so it will be nice to have a lot of fan support for the last home game,” added Michel. “Yorkton is a great team, well-polished, so we will just have to work on our plays and get better every day so we can bring home a championship this year.”
