Weyburn Comp Eagles edged out in McLeod Series games

The Weyburn Comprehensive School hosted the second half of the historic 87th edition of the McLeod Series on Thursday evening.

The Weyburn Comprehensive School hosted the second half of the historic 87th edition of the McLeod Series on Thursday evening, and the visiting Estevan Elecs edged out Weyburn to claim the series for 2024.

After Estevan hosted the first two game on Feb. 13, Weyburn led the series by one point, with the senior girls winning 63-57, and the senior boys losing 76-71.

On Thursday night, the senior girls played first, and Weyburn lost to the Elecs by the score of 73-49. In the senior girls' game, the Elecs led 37-27 at halftime, and went on to outscore Weyburn 36-22 for the 24-point margin of victory.

As for the senior boys' contest, Weyburn led 45-43 at half-time. The Eagles then pulled away in the second half, building a double-digit lead, but Estevan remained close enough to win the series.

The Weyburn senior boys won their side of the evening by the score of 87-76, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit caused by the girls’ loss. The four-game total points were 282-270 for Estevan.

The evening was opened by the WCS senior choir singing O Canada, and the boisterous crowd cheered loudly as each side scored baskets throughout the night.

This was the first time Estevan had won the McLeod Series since 2017. Weyburn has won the series 46 times, while Estevan has now won it on 41 occasions.
