Weyburn Comp Eagles basketball teams on road, wrestler wins silver

The Weyburn Comp Eagles Junior boys and girls basketball teams both travelled to Foam Lake for a tournament

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles Junior boys and girls basketball teams both travelled to Foam Lake for a tournament this weekend.

The girls defeated Yorkton Sacred Heart Friday night 20-16. On Saturday the girls played tough and showed a lot of improvement, but fell to the hosts from Foam Lake 39-31 and then lost to the tournament champions from Wynyard in a game that was decided in the last 20 seconds, with the score 34-31.

The boys defended last year’s championship while cruising to their second tournament win in as many weekends with victories over Kelvington 48-14, Foam Lake 49-19 and Wynyard 46-18.

The next action for both teams is this weekend when they host a combined tournament in the Eagles Gym. The girls kick things off against Melville at 4 p.m. on Friday and the boys play Swift Current at 8:30 p.m.

The Comp Eagles senior boys team was in Estevan over the weekend and played Friday night against Regina Huda. They had a defensively dominating game, winning 89-53.

The second game was against Estevan on Saturday morning. As usual it was a hard fought back-and-forth battle, both teams fighting to the end. Weyburn fell short with a 74-71 loss.

The third place game was against Warman. After a close first half, the Eagles were able to open up the lead and win 80-60.

Overall it was a very successful weekend. The team has a weekend off and will be in Moose Jaw Feb. 17-18 for a tournament at A.E. Peacock High School.

The Comp Eagles senior girls basketball team was in North Battleford over the weekend.

Friday afternoon the girls played North Battleford Comprehensive in front of the entire school and it was an exciting game. It came down to the final seconds, but the Eagles lost by one point in an exciting match-up.

Friday night they played Lloydminster for the first time this season. Lloydminster is another 5A school so it was an important game for Regionals rankings which come out the second week in March. The Eagles ended up winning 48-24 in a low-scoring but important game.

On Saturday the girls played Melfort for the second time this season and had another good game, but lost by 10.

The regular season for the seniors girls is almost over, with only three tournaments left in the schedule: Feb. 10-11 they will play in Lake Lenore, and March 3-4 in Estevan, with a mini home tournament on March 10-11.

The SHSAA 5A Regionals will take place in Lloydminster on the weekend of March 17-18.

Meantime, WCS wrestler Cale Mohan wrestled in the O’Neill Titans Classic over the weekend in the male 73-kg weight category.

He went through the two-day tournament with one bye, two wins and a loss in the gold medal match, taking home the silver medal.
