In a region which is overflowing with generous people who volunteer their time to a variety of good causes, occasionally one is singled out for special recognition.
At a ceremony held at the Carlyle Sports Arena on Saturday, Jan. 15, one are volunteer was called forward to be recognized for his long dedication to the children of the area.
Trevor Morrison of Carlyle has been involved with Carlyle Minor Hockey for more than 15 years, and with the Carlyle Sports Arena for a like period of time.
Stepping down from the presidency of the hockey association this year, Morrison was singled out for the SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Award.
Nominated by the members of the minor hockey board, Morrison becomes the third minor hockey member to receive the prestigious distinction.
"We are very pleased to present Trevor with this award," said Carlyle Minor Hockey president Todd Magotiaux during the centre-ice presentation. "Trevor had dedicated countless hours to the kids, to the rink, and to minor hockey."
Morrison, who had been unaware of the award, appeared embarrassed by the kind words spoken of him, and humbly accepted the award.
With good humour, Morrison posed with Magotiaux, holding the pin and certificate that came with the honour.
"Can you hurry up with the photos?" Morrison said. "He's holding my hand!"
Those near enough to the exchange to overhear what was said laughed at the joke, as well as Morrison's apparent discomfort with the attention he was receiving.
Morrison presided over one of the biggest days Carlyle Minor Hockey has ever been witness to when, in 2009, Carlyle was named as one of five supporting communities for CBC's Hockey Day in Canada.
The event, which was televised nationally, included the hometown return of Dallas Stars captain Brendan Morrow, as well as Stanley Cup champion Jim McKenzie.
The SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Award is granted to an individual who has provided outstanding service as a volunteer to the local hockey community, in any capacity such as a coach, an official, a team manager, or an association organizer.
