Tim Dew doesn’t take the game too seriously

Tim Dew of Windthorst gets set to tee off at hole No. 1 at the Windthorst Golf and Country Club.

Tim Dew of Windthorst isn’t too serious of a golfer and says he golfs maybe once a week at the Windthorst Golf and Country Club.

“I would like to be out here at least twice,” says Dew who works full-time at McMillan Motor Products in Kipling.

Dew says he’s on the Freedom 85 Plan … that’s the problem.

Dew took up golfing later in life. He thinks he was around 40 or so.

“We were too busy with the kids, and I played hockey and ball,” says Dew of the reason for not taking up the leisure sport in his teens.

“We didn’t golf growing up because it was haying season on the farm.”

Dew reminisces about his parents’ outlook on things and says with a smile, “There was work to be done…no time for golf.”

Dew was asked if he ever had a hole-in-one. Chuckling he answers “negative - that’s why I’m still out here.”

Tim, why do you golf?

And without skipping a beat he answered, “I think I’m going to get better at it.”

Dew says he golfs alone but brings his dog along on the cart for company.

Being the jokester he is, he claims he has his best games when he’s by himself and the dog can’t talk.

“You probably have to have a golf partner to prove a hole-in-one,” says Dew.

He doesn’t golf a lot but has golfed on various courses including a course in England, Arizona, Florida and Kenosee Lake.

“Kenosee is a gem,” says Dew.

Dew golfed many games with his brother-in-law who has since passed away.

“He was my golfing partner.”

Because Dew is not an avid golfer, he says he does get intimidated when he goes to those bigger courses.

He enjoys golfing in Windthorst because he can go out any time and it’s not crowded.

It’s cheap and it’s not necessary to book a tee time and that’s why he purchases a membership every year.

When Dew first took up golfing, he thought he should invest in a cart if he’s going to golf.

Well, it wasn’t long before he sold a vehicle to Gordie West and ended up buying a golf cart back from him.

Dew didn’t have many golfing stories to tell but he did tell a story about his golfing experience while on a holiday in England.

While the women were out doing their thing, he and his brother-in-law went to the clubhouse only to find out that everything was booked up. They were so disappointed to find out there was no chance at getting a tee time…or was there?

An older couple in their late 70’s overheard him voicing his displeasure of not being able to play a round of golf so they offered for the two of them to join up with them on their tee time. Dew’s answer was ‘sure.’ Making a contest out of it, the older gentleman asked Dew what his handicap was.

Dew retells the story chuckling “well you gotta golf 10 rounds to have a handicap so I don’t know what my handicap is.” The foursome golfed and on the 16th hole they shook hands and called it a day. Needless to say the older couple won. The older gentleman made an observation about Dew’s game, saying “You can hit a ball a mile but you have no idea where it’s going.”

It turns out that this older gentleman was from Scotland who belonged to a few courses back home. He’s a gold card member to St. Andrew’s which is probably the most prestigious golf course in the world.

After golfing this many years now, Dew says he’s getting to know which club to use and how many yards he can hit with each club.

Dew also says about his golf game “Just when you think you got it figured out…then everything falls apart.”
