There is no stopping Manor's wrestling princess Tianna Kennett as the 16-year-old was victorious again when she took silver in Brazil earlier this month.
Kennett competed at the Cadet Pan Am Championships in Recife, Brazil in the 56 kg women's class taking down E. Sosa of Argentina to qualify for the final stage of the competition. She lost to E. Estilda Primera of Venezuela and said although her last match ended on a disappointing loss she was still very proud of herself.
"Going into the competition I said to myself 'Just win one match.' Once I did that I took another step and focused on my next match. It was really exciting for my team too, because we won silver and my teammates did well, so overall, it was a really exciting feeling to be ranked internationally," she said.
Canada finished the competition with 74 points with Venezuela placing first with 84 points and USA coming in third with 64 points. Kennett said her experience in Brazil was a lot different to other tournaments she's been in before, adding, it is a tournament that advances one as an athlete.
"It tested my metal strength and ability to adjust in order to receive the product you want. Overall, it was a great experience. It was a stepping stone to new and exciting things for my future. It was the first of hopefully many international tournaments and that is really exciting to me. I got to see beyond the little part of what is my wrestling career," she said.
The teenage wrestler said being away from home presented some challenges but it was compounded even more by the fact that she was in a different country. This she said, called for her to adapt to things that she's never seen and experienced before.
"The climate was a big difference and the facilities and the way things were done, was all different. Even if it was a slight difference it still mattered. I had to not only get used to those differences but also not let it affect my performance," she said.
"Also getting used to being around different people, I didn't have my family or my normal coach that I've always had, so that was a challenge too. I just had to text them when I could and they had to watch online instead of being there in person so that was a little difficult because after each match I would have loved to go back to them and do some feedback, but it was just another adjustment to change to my routine, a bit."
Kennett now has an upcoming venture and will be going on an international tour in June. She will be participating in two tournaments with her team, one in Germany and the other in Austria. This she said will act as a training camp for her and will allow her to better hone her skills on the mat.
"This will advance us all as athletes and give us a different taste of training. This may also open the doors for me to go to Worlds at the end of July," she said.
