The Senior Girls Basketball Team, the Assiniboia Rockets, worked hard together for the 2020 Pink Game on January 31 for the Hoops for Hope tournament. This program helped many in their battle against cancer. The funds raised from this year’s game went to Derek Rasmussen’s fight against cancer.

Derek, a local businessman in Assiniboia, wasn't able to attend Friday night's game; but he watched the basketball match between Assiniboia and Â鶹ÊÓƵey via a live feed camera fixed inside the gym instead.

Aside from training before the game and tournament at the end of January, the team were also raising funds for Derek by selling T-shirts. The team employed other unique marketing ideas such as holding an online auction of artistic pieces, including a quilt crafted by Bethany Daechsel and Camille Mansuy in memory of Lisa Reid.

Many in the town and from other parts of the province joined to watch the Assiniboia Senior Girls Basketball Team play Â鶹ÊÓƵey during the 2020 Pink Game in the Assiniboia Composite High School at 8 p.m. on January 31. Although the team lost by five points to Â鶹ÊÓƵey on Friday, they still won the match by showing their united resilience in raising funds to fight against cancer.

Young women from Foam Lake to Melville – all-star-worthy basketball players in Saskatchewan, congregated in Assiniboia for the tournament ending on Saturday, February 1. This year, the Assiniboia Rockets were four-Jesse Rood, five-Raina Peterson, six-Kayla Lethbridge, 11-Nikki Beaubien, 12-Jesse Chadwick, 13-Sarah Feeley, 14-Callie Morhart, 15-Maura Belles, 21-Syndey Huys, 23-Brianne Welder and 32-Hayley Maddess. The Rockets were coached by Al Wandler, Shawna Welder and Kaitlin Oancia.
