Family Day is a wonderful time to focus on something very important, children and their parents spending time together.
This was the reason for the Crossroads Multiple 4-H Club to host a Youth Bonspiel for anyone interested between kindergarten and grade 12. The children were able to show their parents the skills they had acquired, while youth were also taught different aspects of the game by their parents.
In addition to the curling rink being open, the skating rink was also available for families to enjoy.
The idea of a Youth Bonspiel is nothing new to the town of Stoughton, but the Crossroads 4-H Club has only been hosting it for two years as the previous organizer retired.
"It's not competitive, it's just for fun," Anne Kernaleguen, one of the organizers, explained. "There are a lot of new curlers out there and a few volunteers who have offered to help them."
Seeing as it was organized as a fun event, each youth would receive a prize. Kernaleguen also said that without the generosity of the community the Youth Bonspiel wouldn't have been the success it was.
"Huge donations came in from the community and the surrounding area businesses," Kernaleguen said.
"And all the volunteers deserve a big thank you!"
In total there were 50 youth involved in the bonspiel, which was nice for the organizers as it allowed teams to play for an hour, have an hour break, and then play again. Their breaks could be used to go skating or grab food from the canteen.
Beginning at 9 a.m. the day would last until 4:30 p.m.
With laughter, smiles, and a little competition from some of the more experienced curlers the day was enjoyed by many.
