The Estevan Lafrentz Trucking bantam Steelers capped off their most successful season to date with a 38-20 win over the Regina Raiders in their bowl game last Saturday at Optimist Field in Regina.
For many of the Steelers, it was their final game as bantam football players, and they wanted to go out on a winning note. Thanks to an impressive performance, they did just that.
"We played a great game," said Steelers' head coach Preston Majeran. "We held them to only seven points in the first half, and then in the second half we came on strong. We had a lot of good plays from Ian Ferguson, Nolan Tide and Austin Spencer. Also quarterback Kolby Fleury played an excellent game for his last as a Steeler; it was just phenomenal."
The Steelers entered the bowl game against the Raiders, having narrowly missed the playoffs. They were very amped up for the contest against the Ravens, and used it to send a message.
"It was like 'Hey, we missed the playoffs, but we're going to come out and win this game to show them that we should have made the playoffs,'" said Majeran.
The Steelers will be losing a lot of their key players to the high school ranks next year, but they will benefit from a host of quality individuals coming up from the peewee Chargers.
"Evan Tarnes, Tide, Spencer, who came on as a rookie, Aaron Wakely, we'll be losing all these guys," said Majeran. "Fleury, a first-year quarterback, has just been phenomenal. He came out, having never played a game of football, and was able to take over and lead the team to their best season ever."
