Skjonsby, O-line lead Chargers to first win since '08

Kristen Skjonsby scored both touchdowns Saturday for the Estevan Century 21 Chargers as they beat a Regina team for the first time ever, claiming a 15-6 win over the hometown Regina Unicorns to open the Regina Minor Football peewee season.It was the first win for the Chargers since 2008, when they beat the defunct Estevan Oilers twice, and the third overall for an Estevan team over a Regina club since minor football's return in '08. The Chargers were held winless in 2009."It was pretty euphoric actually," said Chargers head coach Steve McClellan. "It was a neat moment, kind of like watching a movie seeing everybody hold it together until time ran up."Skjonsby returned the opening kickoff for a major and scored again on an eight-yard run later in the game.Wyatt Dunford scored the two-point conversion on Skjonsby's second touchdown and quarterback Justyn Taillon added a punt single near the end of the third quarter."Our offensive line was able to really control the trenches, which allowed our ball carriers really to get some motion there and get up the field," said McClellan. "Every player on the team really contributed. Every player had a chance to make a difference, and they did."In Estevan Minor Football atom action from Saturday, the Estevan Miners fell 66-6 to the Regina Gaitors in Regina.Next action for both teams is Saturday in Regina. The Chargers will visit the Regina Rams while the Miners will take on the Regina Alouettes.The Estevan Lafrentz Trucking Steelers will open their 2010 season Sunday when they pay a visit to the Regina Packers.
