Nolan Rohatyn is picking up right where he left off.Winner of the 2009 Men's Classic and Oilmen's tournaments at Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club, the Estevan product opened the 2010 season Monday by winning Woodlawn's other flagship event, the Marv Symons Memorial Open."I had a couple of bogeys early but I got on a bit of a run with three birdies in a row," said Rohatyn. "I think I hit the ball well in these conditions."Rohatyn shot a 1-under-par 70 in what he said was just his second round of the year to beat Scott Blackstock and Scott Nichol by four strokes each.Last year's winner Mike Ross rounded out the championship flight with a 4-over 75 on a cool, windy, and rainy day at the course.Rohatyn started on the 13th hole and was two over par as he began the front nine, when his fortunes began to change."I made a 10-footer on one then had tap-in birdies on two and three which sort of turned the tide for me," he said.Donna Reiger shot a 93 to top the ladies' field, and Gary Marklinger carded a 75 to win the seniors' division over 2009 senior winner Pat Murphy (77) and runner-up Al Miller (79).Candace Bell was second in the ladies' division while Melanie Fonstad was third.Rounding out the seniors' championship flight was Wally Abood, who also finished fourth in 2009.This year's tournament attracted 64 golfers."We were fortunate to get the tournament off with the weather," said Woodlawn general manager Brian Dueck. "We basically had a five-hour gap and it started raining again just after we got in. It was pretty good to get the tournament in because if it would have been pouring we wouldn't have played."Entries were down but that had lots to do with the weather, and the course is in really good shape. We heard lots of comments like that which was good to hear."Marcus Friess topped the men's first flight with an 81, followed by Jim Wilson (83), Parnell Pidhorny (84), and Chris Davidson (84).The second flight was won by Dave Price, who shot 87. Finishing second was Chad Fingler), third was Brant Kersey, and fourth was Stu Michel, all of whom shot 88.Jared Schlamp won the third flight with a 91, beating out Ryan Siever (91), Chris Vianey (91), and Jim Larter (94).Gayle Drader had the longest putt among the ladies on Monday at 42 feet four inches and Derek Elash won the same honour in the men's division by sinking an 18 foot six incher.Lee Symons and Terena Friess had the close approaches on the day to round out the novelty events.
