Plentywood wins Borderline Men’s Fastball League Championship

For the 60th consecutive year, the BMFL championship tournament known as “Trophy Day” was played on the scheduled days.

WEYBURN -The 60th consecutive year of the Borderline Men’s Fastball League (BMFL) concluded on July 23 in Midale with the Plentywood team being crowned 2023 league champions, going undefeated in the play-off championship tournament.  They defeated the Weyburn Renegades 9-4 in the final game.

Plentywood pitcher, Ricky Darvis, son of Borderline League legend, Rick Darvis, was the recipient of the Roger Storle Memorial Award as top pitcher for the tournament.  Ricky’s teammate, shortstop Rob Nyby, was named “most valuable player” of the tournament and was presented with the George Howard Memorial Golden Glove Award.

Jeff Littlejohn of the Midale Jays, as voted upon by the teams in the league, was presented with the Maverick David Paul Duffy Most Sportsmanlike Player Award for 2023.

The BMFL would like to congratulate the Midale Jays and their crew of volunteers for the having their diamond and the entire ball park in such fine shape for the event and for the fine job of hosting the tournament this year.  The league was also honoured to have Archie Howard in attendance to present the MVP award, which his family donated to the league in memory of his late brother. Of note, too, is that Archie was an original player in the Borderline League when it began play in 1964.

For the 60th consecutive year, the BMFL championship tournament known as “Trophy Day” was played on the day(s) it was scheduled for. It has never been postponed or cancelled because of weather.
