The Pee Wee Cougars were "tournamenting" again last weekend. They finished second in their pool and ended up winning the B Side Final in a one day tournament in Estevan. In the first game, against Estevan Sanjel, the Cougars came out strong. The 3 defensive players did a great job of keeping the puck in Estevan's zone, and the forwards pelted the Estevan goalie with shots. The final score was Carlyle 2, Estevan 1. In game 2 the Cougars struggled against their league rivals, the Redvers Rockets. The final score was Redvers 5, Carlyle 2. The Cougars advanced to the B Side Final to play against the Oxbow Huskies. Carlyle scored 7 unanswered goals before the Huskies tried to come back with 4 goals of their own in the 3rd. But it was too late, and Carlyle went on to win 8 to 4. Dalton Loustel had an excellent day and continued to be a challenge for opposing forwards. On one occasion, an Estevan player thought he was going to get past Loustel for a breakaway, but "Sandman Loustel" came at him backwards and butted him off his skates and tucked him ininto the boards. Ashton Magatiaux played strong all day and was constantly poke checking pucks away from opposing forwards and keeping pucks in at the blue line at the other end. She hustled all day long and was awarded Player of the Game in game 1. Kirk Zacharias showed some soccer skills with his feet in moving the puck down the ice and getting the puck out of pile ups. He took some big hits and even delivered a couple. Kruz Wilson was The Wall again this weekend. He even stopped one shot which was set up from point blank range. His skills as a backcatcher came in handy as he gloved the puck and casually handed it to the ref. It would have made the highlight reel. He was awarded Game 2 Player of the Game. Tommy Cappo was sharpshooting again in the game against Redvers when he put in a pretty unassisted goal. He also did a great job of taking in the puck in all three games. His grandma, who attended the tournament, said she was "so proud of him." Jett worked hard on rebounds all day long, and although he didn't pound in a goal, he set up scoring opportunities for many others. His speed and ability to make and catch a pass helped Carlyle to do so well in this tourney. Jacob Chalus ended up scoring the first and last goals of the tournament, plus 5 in between. In the final game, he received the Player of the Game Award after he scored 6 goals in a single game, a double hat trick! I'm sure Oxbow's goalie will have nightmares about number 10 coming down the ice. Jory Dyck will give similar nightmares to the goalie from game 1. J.D. was constantly around the puck in game one and was a part of the pelting of the Estevan goalie. Austin Dovell, back from his hot holiday, didn't miss a beat getting back into hockey, until the end of the B Final when he had trouble leaving the ice. He moved the puck well all day and scored his first goal of the year in game 2. Not only was Jake Macleod Shaking and Baking around defences to score goals, he also made his physical presence known by Shaking and Baking opposing forwards with some crushing hits. He also scored two goals in the tournament; one was a penalty shot which saw the goalie get totally faked left while Jake slid the puck past on the right. Sam Matthewson set up other players all tournament long. He was busy moving the puck from one end of the ice to the other. Sometimes he went around opposing defensive players and sometimes he just went through them. Riley McCrimmon continues to be a force that other players cannot knock off the puck and he did some deking of his own in the final game demonstrating that the "Rock" has hard shoulders, but soft hands. Three games made for a busy day, for the players and for Coach Todd and Coach Gilles, but the Cougars didn't let up and they played hard from the first whistle to the final horn.
It was another great outing for the Pee Wee house team!
