The Pee Wee Cougars played in the Kipling Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 11. Despite the cold, the Cougars were hot, and ended up winning the B Side Final.

The first game of the day was a thriller against Whitewood that ended up in a shootout. Sam Matthewson's big wind up resulted in a big goal just one minute into the game, but Whitewood answered back. Then Jacob Chalus added to the score in the second, but Whitewood tied it up soon after. The Cougars came out roaring in the third. Speedster Mac Attack Niven had many rushes deep into the Whitewood end. On defence, Kirk Zacharias could be seen throwing some weight around in the corners and keeping the puck in at the line. Ashton Magatiaux demonstrated power and finesse on take-aways and moving the puck through the neutral zone. She continues to be a force on D. The third period was incredibly exciting with numerous scoring opportunities by both teams. Kruz Wilson played an outstanding game and made some excellent saves to shut down Whitewood in the third. Riley McCrimmon again showed his strength when a Whitewood player tried to check Riley in the open ice. The player merely deflected off Riley's shoulder as McCrimmon continued on with the puck. The atmosphere was electric and loud. Though you could hardly hear the one ref's frozen whistle, you could sure hear the cheers of the Carlyle fans. "Go Carlyle!" "Way to go Cougars!" "Two hands on your stick!" "Go Jakey!" "Go WhiteI mean Blue!" Despite the enthusiasm in the stands and despite many shots on net, Whitewood hung around for a 5 minute 3 on 3 overtime period. After 5 minutes, it was still tied, which meanta shootout. In the shootout, Jake Macleod, who had been helping out on defence and had been hustling and hitting hard all game, used some quick hands to put one past the Whitewood goalie. Sam Matthewson also scored and showed that he's not just a big slapshot, he's got moves too. But Whitewood got a lucky bounce and ended up winning the shootout. The final score was Carlyle 4, Whitewood 5.

The B side final saw Carlyle against the Grenfell Spitfires. After the loss to Whitewood, Carlyle cranked up their game. Dalton Loustel, who had been a powerful part of the defence all day long, put in what would be the winning goal in this game. Austin Dovell used his strength and shoulders to move the Airplanes into the boards and he was around the puck all day. Jacob Chalus scored 2 goals in the game and put on a clinic for how to get past 2 D men with one move. Jory Dyck also had a great day moving the puck and setting up numerous scoring opportunities. He also slid one past the goaltender in the first period. Tommy Cappo, whose checking had kept Grenfell out of Carlyle's end all game, decided to add to the scoring in the third period. After spending the day backchecking and making some great passes, Jett BigEagle finally smacked in a goal in the third. It would be the final goal of the game. The final score: Carlyle 7 and Grenfell 1. It was an exciting day of hockey and another successful tournament for the Cougars.
