Lamontagne steals five for first Oilmen's title

Duane Lamontagne wasn't taking any credit for his team's championship-game win Sunday at the Oilmen's Bonspiel.

Duane Lamontagne wasn't taking any credit for his team's championship-game win Sunday at the Oilmen's Bonspiel.

"My guys were all shooting good," Lamontagne, skip of the Pure Energy team, said after stealing five points in a 7-1 win over Fusion Industries at the 51st annual Oilfield Technical Society event. "They all had their draw weight down and they had their guard weight down so I didn't have a lot to shoot at. It was pretty easy for me."

Lamontagne, third Arron Lamontagne, second Mike Bunz, and lead Jim Blanke scored two points in the second end to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The skip's plan to keep a lot of rocks in play caused problems for Fusion's Kevin Anderson as Pure Energy stole one point in the third, two in the fourth, and two more in the fifth before the team shook hands.

"He didn't have much to shoot at," said Lamontagne. "We had everything sewed up. He had hard shots the whole game. Because he's a hell of a curler he probably would have beat us if he had easy shots.

"That's my style of game is a lot of rocks in play. That's the way I've always played and either you win or you lose bad."

The bonspiel ran Thursday through Sunday with 54 teams competing.

It was Lamontagne's first A-side win at the bonspiel.

"I think this is the best they've ever had it," he said of the ice conditions, "but of course I won so it's always good when you win."

In the B final Estevan Meter hit and rolled for three in the eighth end to eke out an 8-7 victory over Syntech Enerflex.

Jerry Mainil Construction beat Weatherford 7-4 in the C final, two-time champion Brent Gedak of Brent Gedak Welding beat X-site Construction 6-2 in five ends in the D1 final, and Epping Energy scored a 6-3 win over TS&M in seven ends in the D2 final.
