KIPLING - The Kipling Curling Club had made the announcement last fall that due to the uncertainties of COVID-19, the start of the curling season had been delayed.
Dust off the brooms. Get ready to curl.
The club has announced that it is eager to begin the season on Jan. 17.
The club welcomes curlers of all levels to become a member. Sign up as an individual or bring a team.
There will be regular league curling on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 49ers drop-in curling on Monday afternoons and new this year, members can have free additional access to the ice for practices, games or family fun.
Curling provides fellowship, entertainment and is an enjoyable way of getting some exercise.
“We were trying to do our best to predict the future with COVID,” explains Dan Manns, president of the Kipling Curling Club. “A lot of clubs opened last year and then with the new regulations had to shut down.”
“We figured we’d give it a go,” says Manns. “If we can’t have our bonspiels, we can’t make any money.”
COVID restrictions are still in place.
There have been questions regarding the Kipling Curling Club’s policies regarding masks. Everyone is required to wear a mask while in the rink. Upon showing proof of vaccination you may remove your mask while on the curling ice, otherwise the mask must remain in place.
The club plans to hold at least four bonspiels in the eight weeks they plan to be running.
The family spiel will kick off the season starting on Jan. 22.
The following weekend the club will hold their women’s spiel.
The club plans to host an ag spiel in February and their open spiel in March.
The lounge upstairs will be open during the bonspiels only.
“We’re going to be getting special occasion permits only for the liquor licence,” explains Manns.
Having to still deal with COVID regulations, it’s hopeful that next season will be a little bit more back to normal.
Volunteers from the curling club have been busy getting the ice ready, painting the lines this past week.
