Announced in mid-February was the January Sask Sport Athlete of the Month Award recipients.

Athlete of the Month is given to nominees who have shown outstanding performance in their sport.

Proud of all Saskatchewan athletes, Sask Sport, decided on Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers to be given the accolade.

Sask Sport decided on the two figure skaters who are registered out of the Wawota Skating Club, making them the only Olympic figure skating team registered under a Saskatchewan club.

They received the award after winning a bronze medal in the pairs division of the 2014 Canadian Tire Skating Championship held in Ottawa on Jan. 9 to 12, which earned them a spot on the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Canadian Figure Skating Team as well as the 2014 Canadian Team for the World Figure Skating Championships to be held at the end of March in Japan.

Lawrence and Swiegers recently competed in the Olympics where they placed 14th.

Other nominees for the January Athlete of the Month included Alyssa Clairmont of Regina for diving and the 2014 Women's Squash Team.

Between Sochi and Japan, the pairs figure skating team will be coming home shortly with a stop at the Kennedy Skating Club on March 2 for the club's annual skating carnival.
