Haunting at CPP continues

Fear the ReaperÂ… The Nipawin Hawks netminder might not believe in ghosts or goblins but the Grim Reaper was hanging over his shoulder during Sunday afternoon's game in Weyburn where the Wings beat the Hawks 4-0.

The Yorkton Terriers came to Weyburn Tuesday night and for a while it didn't look like they'd be able to play any hockey due to darkness. The lights were dimmed due to pre-game festivities, then wouldn't come back on. It looked as if the fans and players would have to make the short trek to the Tom Zandee Sports Arena but luckily someone was able to find the right combination to the power switches and the game was back on after a fifteen- minute delay.

And on it went15 seconds into the first frame Weyburn's Scott Kirkham found the back of the Terriers' net on a nifty cross-ice pass from Taylor Ernst to make it 1-0 in the Wings' favour.

The Wings would soon find themselves down two men due to two separate penalties, and Yorkton's Blaine Tendler made Weyburn pay by knotting up the game at 1-1, much to the displeasure of Red Wing's coach Dwight McMillan.

With just under seven minutes remaining in the opening period Weyburn's Cole Klippenstein dumped the puck from centre ice on Yorkton's netminder Devin Peters. The puck took a funny hop into the back of the net giving the Wings back their one goal advantage.

In the later part of the second period Weyburn coughed up the puck as netminder Mitch Kilgore went behind his net to handle the puck but put it right on his defenceman's stick who promptly scored on his own net. This Miles Cameron goal gave new life to Yorkton as they trailed 3-2 going into the third period.

Weyburn found themselves in a deep hole again when the overzealous referees put the Wings down two skaters again but to their credit, they battled through the shorthanded play and helped Kilgore by keeping traffic to a minimum in front of the Weyburn crease.

With Yorkton short a man the Wings took advantage and with some gritty work Rodney Cowie battled into the front of the Terriers crease and lifted the puck high on the glove side Yorkton's netminder to make it a 4-2 contest.

Tricks and treats for Weyburn Red Wings

Weyburn fans were treated to a scary haunted house of sorts as they entered the front of the Crescent Point Place Arena Halloween day. The fans fought their way into the haunted house to watch the Nipawin Hawks play their hometown Wings. The crowd commented on the eerie presence of the arena as the roof leaked. Plastic and buckets were placed amidst the puddles to catch the multitude of areas of melting snow from a new leaking roof and the splash of Halloween decorations for good measure in the still unfinished mezzanine.

The Wings coming fresh off their 6-0 victory over the Kindersley Klippers at home Oct. 29 in front of an enthusiastic crowd were hoping to teach the Hawks another stinging lesson like the Norte Dame Hounds did the night before.

Like a chubby kid on Halloween treats, the Weyburn Red Wings were all over the Nipawin Hawks Sunday afternoon at Crescent Point Place Arena.

With only eight minutes into the afternoon game the Wings potted their first goal when Brock Appleyard along with Drew George and Jesse Ross made it a 1-0 contest.

Five minutes later Coltyn Sanderson along with Rodney Cowie and Shawn Cowie made it a 2-0 game.

While Nipawin's Brent Beker was sent to the sin-bin for slashing, Weyburn's George and Rhys Thomas made it 3-0 on the power play with a 'spooktacular' passing play by the Red Wings duo.

The Wings came out with their game faces on and proceeded to dominate the second period by continually pummeling their opponents with shot after shot. With five minutes remaining in the second period Cole Klippenstein along with Appleyard and Ross made it a 4-0 haunting of the Hawks.

With ten minutes remaining in the game Weyburn went on the power play once again but coughed up the puck to a surging Hawks forward. Wings' netminder Mitch Kilgore made the save of the game when he flashed the leather and captured the puck to the dismay of the entire Nipawin bench.

Even with the few chances the Hawks put forward, Kilgore handled most of the shots with relative ease to keep his shutout intact. The three stars on the afternoons game were Mitch Kilgore, Drew George and Mitch Appleyard, all of the Wings.
