Last weekend 26 Saskatchewan women gathered in Moose Mountain Provincial Park at Golf Kenosee where they competed in the Amateur Women's and Senior Women's Provincial Championships.
Ten of these competitors were a part of the Amateur Women's tournament, while the remaining 16 competed in the Senior Women's tournament. These numbers included three Golf Kenosee women in the Amateur's including Shelley Big Eagle, Colleen Currie, and Alison Dunning. The Senior Women's tournament saw four local women take to their home course with Jeanie Arndt, Wendy Currie, Bev Grimes, and Bonnie Brady participating.
The first round took place at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 4, finishing up mid-afternoon with some thinking the day had gone well, while others were not pleased with their first day showing. This would leave them looking to catch up in the second round on Saturday, July 5, but again some women exclaimed their pleasure in having knocked off a few strokes, while others were disappointed in their second day.
Luckily for the women a third day of golf was held as a final round would help determine the winners for the event.
Both the Amateur Women's and the Senior Women's Championships were set up as a 54 hole stroke play. The tournament was organized to have three rounds of golf in three days, with a player banquet and reception held in the evening on July 5.
Upon conclusion of the final round the Amateur Women's Championship was won by Kimberly Risulmi of Lloydminster, winning her first Provincial title, with a plus 15 over the three days competition. Kim Walker of Regina took second place with a plus 18 and Brooke Hobson earned third with plus 19 on the course.
The Senior Women's Championship was won by Lorie Boyle of Moose Jaw with a plus 36. This actually marks Boyle's sixth Provincial title since 2006. Boyle was followed by Jo-Anne Schiller of Lloydminster who shot a plus 38. Tammy Bezaire of Warman took third place with a plus 41 on the course.
The local women in the Amateur Championship took 8th (Shelley Big Eagle), 9th (Colleen Currie) and 10th (Alison Dunning.) Golf Kenosee members in the Senior Women's Championship finished 5th (Wendy Currie), 11th (Jeanie Arndt), tied for 12th (Bev Grimes), and 16th (Bonnie Brady).
Brian Lee, Executive Director of Golf Saskatchewan, was happy with how the combined event went over the weekend. The three top finishers in the Amateur Women's and Senior Women's Championships, if they are Golf Saskatchewan members, have earned a spot on the Saskatchewan team for Nationals which will be held in Woodstock, ON, for the Amateur Women and in Sherbrooke, QC, the Senior Women will compete.
"I'm extremely happy with how it's gone," Lee stated. "The Golf Kenosee community and the community in and around Kenosee are very welcoming and the event has gone well despite Mother Nature's plans last weekend [June 28 and 29], but that just meant the course was softer than normal."
"It was an excellent test of golf."
This is the third event Golf Saskatchewan has held, in recent years, at Golf Kenosee Lee explained. Past tournaments have included the Amateur Women's and the Mixed Championship.

Next year, though the site of the championships are yet to be determined, Lee encourages all golfers to think about taking part.
"We encourage any golfer to come out and play next year... just ask competitors here if you're in the same club how much fun they had at the event and think about attending," Lee stated.
