Flyers off to finals to defend their title

In Big Six action, last year’s champions are still in the running as they took out the Redvers Rockets in a series three games to one, while Yellow Grass has beaten Bienfait and are headed into the final round of playoffs.

                In Big Six action, last year’s champions are still in the running as they took out the Redvers Rockets in a series three games to one, while Yellow Grass has beaten Bienfait and are headed into the final round of playoffs.

                Last week Redvers met Wawota on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Wednesday, March 1, and Sunday, March 5. Prior to that Wawota had earned a win over Redvers on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

                The games were battles as Redvers visited Wawota on Feb. 28, where the Rockets earned a 3-2 victory. Goals scored came down to two in the first period for Redvers: Jordon Miller was assisted by Jarvis Ducharme and Koltyn Miller, then a second goal was earned by Drew Hoff off of an assist by Ducharme.

                Wawota answered back with 5.8 seconds left in the first with a goal by Ryan Taylor assisted by Warren Hunter and Dylan Lamontagne.

                Heading into the second Redvers led 2-1. Scoring early in the first Redvers stretched the lead with a goal by Kelsey Kewler assisted by Devon Wolensky. Wawota fought back and earned their second goal of the night with Taylor Ernst finding the net assisted by Ryan Taylor and Thomas Husband.

                The game was physical, but scores remained the same for the rest of the night leaving Redvers with a 3-2 win over the Flyers.

                With a series sitting 1-1, the teams met in Redvers on March 1. The physical series continued with Game Three going into overtime for Wawota to earn a 4-3 win.

                Wawota came out to an early lead with a goal in the first by Rob West assisted by Lucas Hislop and Warren Hunter. The second period saw Redvers come out with two goals within minutes of each other: Jordon Miller earned one with assists by Drew Hoff and Kevin Mann, as well as a goal by Remi Lamotte with assists by Jarvis Ducharme and Drew Hoff.

                Wawota answered back in the second period to tie the game up with a goal by Kevin Lincoln assisted by Rob West and Drake Bodie.

                Heading into the third the teams were tied 2-2. With a power play Wawota earned goal number three with Drake Bodie finding the net off an assist by Dylan Lamontagne and Victor VanDresar. But, with seconds left and Redvers gaining a power play, Craig Gaudet stepped up and earned a goal off of an assist from Jordon Miller and Drew Hoff.

                Tied 3-3, the teams entered overtime, which Wawota took momentum in quickly with Warren Hunter scoring a goal at 8:54 assisted by Lucas Hislop.

                Leading the series 2-1, Wawota took Redvers on again on Sunday, March 5. The meeting saw Wawota come out to a quick lead in the first period with two goals: Drake Bodie earned one off an assist from Warren Hunter, while Devin Stewart also earned a goal off an assist from Hunter.

                The second period saw Redvers come out strong with two goals by Francis Lamotte; the first was assisted by Devin Wolensky and Koltyn Miller, while Lamotte’s second goal was unassisted. With under a minute on the clock, however, Riley Riddell found Redvers’ net off an assist by Drake Bodie to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

                The third period was a battle, but Wawota successfully defended their end, while putting the pressure on Redvers which led to a second goal by Riley Riddell off an assist by goalie, Guillaume Blouin.

                With Wawota winning the series, they’re set to defend last year’s Big Six title.
