Estevan minor hockey teams thrive during long weekend tournaments

Two A-side championships and a B-event title during the weekend.

ESTEVAN - It was a great weekend for a trio of teams in the Estevan Minor Hockey Association.

The Estevan U11 carded Bearcats won the Â鶹ÊÓƵwest Cyclones tournament that was held Saturday and Sunday in Gull Lake, defeating the Moosomin Lady Rangers 3-0 in the A final.

Hunter Sands, Jorja Rutledge and Abbey Jutrus had the goals in the final, and goalie Madeline Stead was the player of the game with the shutout.

Estevan also defeated the Swift Current Colts and Wood River Ice Cats on their way to the final.

The carded team is comprised of players from the Senchuk Bearcats 1 and 2 teams that play in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League.

The Estevan U9 Bearcats carded team participated in the Regina Rebels’ female hockey tournament this past weekend and came out with the B-side championship.  

Estevan lost games on Saturday against Regina Rebels Blue and Saskatoon Comet Mission. The following day, they defeated the Weyburn Goldwings in the B semifinal, and then beat the Brandon Kings 3-2 in the B final. Mila Simpson had two goals in the final and Paige Wilhelm also scored.

The Estevan U18 A Bruins rallied to win the Austyn Schenstead Memorial Tournament in Warman this past weekend.

Estevan opened with a pair of victories, beating the Saskatoon Aces 5-0 and the Warman Lynx 6-1. Then they lost 8-1 to the Calgary Wolverines. Estevan finished tied for second in the round robin with the Aces, but secured a spot in the A final because they beat the Aces in the round robin.

Estevan trailed the Wolverines 5-2 after the first period. Hayden Terrett and Brayden Mehler had Estevan’s goals.

JT Schrader and Kade Phillips scored in the second, and Carter Hirsch tied the game three minutes into the third.

Phillips had the overtime winner.

After allowing five goals on 13 shots in the A final, goaltender Tallan Howie stopped the final 19 shots he faced.

The U18 A Bruins will kick of their first round of provincials versus the Esterhazy Flyers on Thursday in Esterhazy. Game 2 will be in Estevan at Affinity Place on Sunday at 5:45 p.m.
