The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs cheerleaders took top spot in their division at the recent Best of the West competition.

MOOSE JAW - The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs cheerleaders’ first competition in two years was a successful one.

ECS took top spot in the senior high intermediate division at the Best of the West event Sunday at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw. It was their first event since Best of the West in 2020, which Estevan also won.

Coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme said ECS finished with an overall score of 61.20 out of 100, and after deductions, their score was 60.70. Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon was second with an overall score of 52, and 45 after deductions.

“Our cheer was good, our motions were quite sharp,” said Chepil-Kvamme. “We had good involvement with our crowd during our cheer. Our dance was amazing.”

They hit all of their stunts as well.

The Elecs will need to work on making better use of the floor, and the speed of their transitions between stunts before their next meet, which will be provincials next month.

Still, it was a great showing for the Elecs, who have 13 athletes on this year’s team. Most of them are in their first year.

“We went in with a smaller team, a brand new team … with very few returning athletes. I had a lot graduate in those two years when we were unable to cheer,” said Chepil-Kvamme.

She praised the team’s community coaches – Ashley Tedford, Macie Hall and Makenna Van De Woestyne for all of their contributions in helping the athletes further their skills.

This week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
