It's that time of year again, that is time to look forward to the 4th Annual Flyin' High at the Eagle Showdown.
Speed and entertainment comes to car enthusiasts once again the racing event can be found one mile west of Manor just south of Hwy 13 is the yard of Derrick Big Eagle. Here a 1/4 mile dirt track used for personal coaching as well as the research and development of modified cars was created by the Big Eagle family and Joey Galloway and his parents (Dan and Monica). The idea to host a racing event soon developed as the track was now established and potential could be seen.
"Joey Galloway and his parents Dan and Monica Galloway have been a big help every year," Big Eagle says of working with the Galloway's in the joint venture.
The Showdown is brought to the public by Eagle Motorsports and Joey Galloway Racing, this year to be held on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Practice rounds will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, between 5 p.m. And 7 p.m. for the racers. They include five different classes: Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Sport Modifieds, Modifieds and Late Models, as well as an open show.
Saturday's activities will begin with hot laps at 1:30 p.m., followed by racing at 2 p.m. The event will see 30 lap features for the Hobby Stock, Street Stock, Sport Modified, and Late Models, while a 50 lap feature with a five minute fuel stop on lap 25 will be the main event.
"This year we've followed the same plan, but we have added a late model car event because we've seen a few more people in the area with them," Big Eagle said.
Pit passes will be available for $30, while general entry admission is $10, with youth aged six-years and younger free.
During each intermission of class races three drivers will be auctioned off in a calcutta.
Last year the winners of the Calcutta included Davin Emmel of Torquay, Jeff and Deb Russill, and Lloyd Bendtson and Michael "Cannon" Smith all generously donated their winnings back to the Manor Fire Department.
"Last year we were very thankful as the people who won the calcuttas donated all of the winnings back to the Manor Fire Department," Big Eagle explained.
The event will be followed by a cabaret featuring Big Eagle's friends, Third Degree Birnz, who have been to the event before, providing hours of entertainment to the crowd. The cab will last from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets will cost $10 for entry and the cabaret is open to everyone who is of the age of majority.
As a way to promote an evening of enjoyment, camping spots are available, though they have no power or sewer hookups, it is a perfect spot to spend the night after enjoying the cabaret.
The event is again being held to raise funds for the Manor Fire Department. This is a way for Big Eagle to give back to his community, while providing entertainment to the hardworking individuals in the area before the cold weather sets in.
"We hope to see lots of people out again this year and to continue it as an annual event," Big Eagle stated. "Hopefully we can keep making it bigger."
"We're still working towards getting the Manor Fire Department into a new shop and a new fire truck in place."
