Doug Boivin hails from Broadview and is a very well-rounded golfer to choose the term correctly. Doug was golfing at the White Bear Golf Course with friends in what is an annual challenge, playing for the coveted J.A.B. [just another bogey} trophy.听
The annual challenge began in 2000 amongst friends and family; being the reigning champion Boivin had the right to select the course of his choice to defend the title for 2020.
This year the trophy was up for grabs, with only three participants able to make the trip and a local reporter/course marshal joining up with the group for the round.
Some years the challenge has had as many as 20 golfers participating, all hoping to hold the trophy at day鈥檚 end.
The format of play for the one-day match this year was stroke play for all 18 holes, so the best score wins.
Boivin regularly plays golf at Broadview, making the trek to Whitewood weekly for men鈥檚 night, and often plays at the White Bear course as well.
Boivin is an avid golfer and has a long list of courses he has golfed at in Saskatchewan, including Nipawin鈥檚 Evergreen Course, along with Waskesiu, Katepwa, Tor Hill, Avonlea, Deer Valley and Mainprize, to name just a few.
He has played Wolf Creek in Nevada, La Quinta in California, and Teeth of the Dog in Dominican Republic, noting that they are all great golf destinations.
Boivin, if given the choice to play any of the great courses in the world, would choose St. Andrew鈥檚 in Scotland, and advocates that if any golfer is looking for a must play course, he would suggest playing the course in Nipawin, right here in Saskatchewan.
Boivin has managed to play over 200 rounds some years, and started golfing in his twenties after a good friend coaxed him to come out and try the game. He has cut back his play and now plays about 100 rounds each year.
Boivin has had one hole in one, coming on the third hole at a course in Palm Springs, a 167-yard par 3, doing the damage with a 7-iron, and had his best round to date at the course in Outlook, shooting a 68.
Boivin likes Taylor Made drivers and irons and a Ping putter to knock down his favoured ProV1 ball.
Boivin is a true fan of the 鈥済rand old game,鈥 willing to show up alone, on occasion, and hook up with a group of any skill level and enjoy playing golf at any course anywhere.
鈥淕et out and enjoy this game鈥 is his advice to anyone thinking about taking up the sport and wanting to play.
Boivin defended his title and is this year鈥檚 J.A.B. champion.
