Cougars win two over Oil Kings

The Carlyle Cougars got their first win of the season at home Friday when they beat the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings by a score of 7-3. Ben Johnstone, Jonny Gaudet and Dakota Rose combined for a total of 18 points on the night.

The Carlyle Cougars got their first win of the season at home Friday when they beat the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings by a score of 7-3.Ìý

Ben Johnstone, Jonny Gaudet and Dakota Rose combined for a total of 18 points on the night. Johnstone had six goals and one assist, Rose one goal and five assists and Gaudet had six helpers as well.

Newly acquired defenseman Matt Lavallee looked good in Cougars colors adding an assist and two penalty minutes (PIMs). Korby Boutin had an assist to round out the scoring. Carlyle starting goaltender Landon Audet was solid between the pipes, making 24 saves as the Cougars outshot the Oil Kings 42-27.

The Cougars were without forwards Tyler Matthewson, Cooper Fox and defenseman Tyler Fleck. Chaelynn Boutin won the $185 50/50, Brian Isleifson won The Office Bar and Grill pizza and Jace Fischer won a cake from Carries Kitchen.

The next night in Kipling was the Oil Kings home opener. It was seeming to be a great start to the game with the Oil Kings’ first goal scored early in the first period by newcomer Taylor Ernst and assists to Carson Harcourt and Caley Bjork.

The Oil Kings would go on to add another three goals in the first period with goals going to Aaron Roth, Lane Roth and Drew Schiller. Assists would come from Ernst, Harcourt, Aaron Roth and Derek Bachert. That would be all the goals scored by the Oil Kings.

The Cougars would score three in the first, two in the second and five in the third for a 10-4 win.

The Oil Kings racked up 14 minutes in penalty minutes while the Cougars were assessed a total of 26 minutes.

With the win, Carlyle improved their record to 2-3. Brett Turgeon led the way for the Cougars with three goals and an assist while Clayton Geiger had one goal and three assists.ÌýÌý

In all 14 different Cougars hit the scoresheet.

Brett Turgeon had a hat trick for Carlyle. Johnsotone, Geiger, Rose, Mark Shaw, Cooper Fox and Korby Boutin also scored.

Carlyle’s next home game is slated for Dec. 4, when rival Wawota Flyers come to town. Puck drop is at 8 p.m. and strict COVID guidelines will be in place.
