聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Carlyle Skating Club is welcoming two new CanSkate coaches this year. These coaches include Taylor Hengen of Arcola and Halle Doty of Carlyle.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Hengen has been skating since she was two-years-old, which gives her 16 years experience on the ice.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚 was a Program Assistant for four years and was helping out,鈥� Hengen explained. 鈥淢y mom coached skating so I had an idea of what it was about and I really enjoy working with little kids.鈥�
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲hen I was in CanSkate all of the older girls were Program Assistants and we all loved them, they were amazing to me, and it was just something I always wanted to do.鈥�
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The path from assisting to coaching was a natural one for Hengen who is going into her third year coaching.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚鈥檝e been coaching in Lampman and Arcola, and this year I鈥檒l be starting in Carlyle,鈥� she explained.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Hengen enjoys working with the young participants, 鈥淭hey鈥檙e lots of fun and silly, they don鈥檛 care what people think of them and always want to have a good time while they鈥檙e learning,鈥� she said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 She is excited for the year and to get to teach a new group of kids in Carlyle as she鈥檚 been working with those in Lampman and Arcola for awhile now, but is looking forward to filling her winter with skating.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Doty has been skating since she was about three or four-years-old, which gives her 13 years experience on the ice with six of those as a Program Assistant.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚鈥檝e always really liked working with little kids and teaching them what I had learned,鈥� Doty said. 鈥淏ecoming a coach is a lot of work, I鈥檝e been preparing for it for awhile and go for three full 12 hour days to be certified. I like the course because it鈥檚 a great way to gain more knowledge and become better at evaluating the kids鈥� learning.鈥�
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e have everything prepped for CanSkate and I think we鈥檙e as ready as we can be.鈥�
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Doty added her favourite part of working in the Can Skate program is to see kids improve.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚t鈥檚 great to see them work at something and come back with what they鈥檝e improved on since the last time,鈥� Doty stated.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Doty is looking forward to the year: 鈥淚鈥檝e had other jobs before, but I think this is so exciting because I鈥檝e worked so hard for this.鈥�
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 CanSkate classes begin on Monday, Oct. 26, and currently there are 17 CanSkaters signed up.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e have a lot of new kids who haven鈥檛 skated before, who won鈥檛 really be able to stand on skates, so I鈥檓 really excited to see them learn, and we also have a few that are almost at the StarSkate level, so being able to help them achieve that will is exciting,鈥� Doty stated.
