The Carlyle PureChem Cougars’ home opener saw more than 500 people attend, which was a pleasant surprise as the Cougars had hoped to pack the rink prior to the doors opening. The rink was filled with fans on Friday, Nov. 4, and it was an exciting night of hockey.

“We just want to express our gratitude to the fans that came out,” Dallas Lequyer, President of the Cougars Board and player, stated. “It was overwhelming. We had in the neighbourhood of 500 people through the door and the 50/50 was $950!”

“We are going to do free admission again to our game Sunday night [Nov. 13] at 7 p.m. against Midale.”

Kicking off the season, the Carlyle PureChem Cougars invited alumni players out to drop the first puck of their #comebackseason at the rink at 8 p.m. Alumni included Al Humphries, Boyd Cochrane, and Eddie Brady.

Wawota led in the first period with a goal by Justin Lamontagne, assisted by Riley Riddell and Brent Struble. The Cougars fought back with Todd Brady earning the Cougars’ first goal this season assisted by Phil Doucet and Jordan Fox. The period wasn’t over yet, and answering the Cougars goal was Justin Lamontagne for number two of the night; he was assisted by Kayle Swanson and Brent Struble. Ending the first the score was 2-1 for the Flyers.

The second period was dominated by the Flyers with goals by Kayle Swanson assisted by Kent Sauter, Brent Struble assisted by Justin Lamontagne and Riley Riddell, Kent Sauter assisted by Taylor Ernst and Brent Struble, and Drake Bodie assisted by Ryan Taylor. The Flyers led at the end of the second 6-1.

The Cougars continued to play hard and pushed forward with a goal by Ben Johnstone, but the Flyers managed to answer that one with Brent Struble finding the back of the net, assisted by Riley Riddell and Kevin Lincoln. Ending the game at 7-2 for the Flyers.

Carlyle came out against a tough team in their home opener, last season’s champions, but the young Cougars fought hard and kicked off the rust from the three year break from the league. It was an exciting, fast-paced game, which was well enjoyed by those in attendance.

Elsewhere in the Big Six League (at the time The Observer went to print): Bienfait won over Midale 7-2 and Oxbow over Redvers 4-0 on Friday, Nov. 4. Carnduff beat Oxbow 4-1 and Redvers beat Midale 6-1 on Saturday, Nov. 5

The Cougars next game is at home on Sunday, Nov. 13, against the Midale Mustangs. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
