Figure skating is a sport which takes dedication as an athlete, but which requires countless volunteer hours from a parent.

Two individuals with the Carlyle Skating Club were honoured by Skate Canada in Regina on Saturday, May 3.

Skate Canada athlete, Tiana Delalleau (6), was honoured with the Skate Canada Section CanSkate Athlete Award, while local volunteer Karen Fischer was given the Region 1, SaskEnergy Regional Champion Volunteer Award.

Delalleau has been skating for three years and her love of the sport has led her to excel in it. Not only is she a talented skater who works hard, but she is a pleasure to coach according to Dawn Dyer.

"Tiana is grouped with quite a few older skaters and keeps up to them very well, she also doesn't hesitate to demonstrate any skill in front of her peers," Dyer explained. "She will work and work until she has the element near perfection. This goes to show she cares about her skating"

"Myself and the program assistants agree Tiana is very enjoyable to coach"

The dinner banquet in Regina was followed by an awards ceremony, where Delalleau was not only excited to receive an award for her efforts throughout the year; but, she was in awe as she was presented the award by Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers which was the absolute best part of the experience to Delalleau.

Later she was also given the pleasure of presenting Lawrence with flowers following a tribute to the Olympic skaters at the end of the night.

Delalleau is thankful for all of the hard work that her figure skating coach, Dyer, has done for her during the regular season as well as the Spring School sessions.

Delalleau's award was for confidence on the ice, while maintaining a positive attitude, an eagerness to continually learn new elements, has fun as she skates and interacts with others, as well as for being fair and cooperating with others.

Fischer was awarded the SaskEnergy Champion Volunteer Award for continually being someone the Carlyle Skating Club can count on. She is enthusiastic and dedicated when it comes to the club and manages to give time to both the Carlyle Skating Club and Carlyle Minor Hockey.

She not only supports her own children by attending events of the Carlyle Skating Club, but is willing to help with planning, organizing, setting up, take down, and encourages all to do their best.
