Carlyle Cougars clench important win and are in position to make playoffs

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars partnered with Carlyle Pharmasave on Friday, Feb. 2, with a chance to win $25,000. A 50/50 draw was held at each home tournament prior to the Feb.

聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Carlyle PureChem Cougars partnered with Carlyle Pharmasave on Friday, Feb. 2, with a chance to win $25,000.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 A 50/50 draw was held at each home tournament prior to the Feb. 2 game to determine the contestants; Nathan Turko, Jake Big Eagle, and Darryl Sutherland took their turns attempting a shot on net, through the five hole, from the centre line. Big Eagle was the closest to making the shot, but in the end none of the contestants were able to win the big prize.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 As a consolation Carlyle Pharmasave gave each contestant a $50 gift card.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e were extremely happy to be able to do this with the Cougars for a second year,鈥 Steve Schultz explained. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a good way to get people talking about the Cougars and coming out to the games. We had a lot of people in the store, on Twitter all asking us when the chance to win was and they were all very excited about it.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Dallas Lequyer with the PureChem Cougars added, 鈥淲e really appreciate the community support and it鈥檚 been great to be able to partner with Pharmasave this year and last year on something like this.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Although those competing were disappointed to have missed, all three agreed that it was a fun experience to be able to try their hand at making such a difficult shot.

Vs Redvers Rockets recap

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The Carlyle PureChem Cougars hosted the Redvers Rockets on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The game was controlled early by the Rockets, while the PureChem Cougars pushed hard in the final period, but were unable to sway the momentum in their favour.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Redvers scored four goals in the first period, while Carlyle was only able to answer back with one by Branden Lequyer assisted by Tyler Fleck and Kelly Currie.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The second period saw both Redvers and Carlyle earn goals bringing the score to 2-5. Brett Turgeon scored with seven seconds left in the second off assists by Brent McLean and Nathan Heck.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The third period saw the PureChem Cougars battle hard with two more goals scored to bring them up to 4 points for the night. Goals were scored by Clayton Geiger off assists by Tyler Fleck and Blair Toms; and Brett Turgeon got his second of the night off assists by Zach Brown and Clayton Geiger. They were unable to stop the Rockets from scoring two goals in the third which resulted in a 4-7 loss for the PureChem Cougars.

Vs Arcola/Kisbey Combines recap

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The PureChem Cougars came out strong against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines on Friday, Feb. 2, however, with a 10-2 win.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The first period saw the PureChem Cougars continually find the net as 7 goals were posted. Brent McLean started off the avalanche of goals off assists by Mark Shaw and Brett Turgeon. Ben Johnstone earned the second off assists by Clayton Geiger and Tyler Fleck. Brett Turgeon scored one off Mark Shaw. Brayden Librion chalked up another goal off assists by Brent McLean and Joel Mack. Ben Johnstone earned his second of the game off an assist by Cooper Fox. Mark Shaw then found the net after being set up by Brett Turgeon and Terrance Ross. While Raelan Thompson finished off the goals for the Cougars in the first period off an assist by Nathan Heck.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 For the Combines in the first, Jared Taylor earned a goal off assists by Duane Hislop and Jeff Houston; followed by a goal with under a minute left by Leevi Runge assisted by Rhett Palmer.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Heading into the second the PureChem Cougars were up 7-2, when Jordan Fox increased the lead by one off an assist by Nathan Heck and Branden Lequyer. The PureChem Cougars shutout the Combines that period.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the third Kelly Currie earned back to back goals. The first was off assists by Blair Toms and Joel Mack, while the second came from Joel Mack and Mark Shaw.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The PureChem Cougars won 10-2 over the Combines, but also earned meaningful points to extend a lead over the Combines in the last rush at Playoffs as the regular season comes to a close.

Vs Midale Mustangs recap

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The PureChem Cougars battled in a close one versus the Midale Mustangs on Saturday, Feb. 3.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the first period Ben Johnstone earned the goal to kick off the game off an assist by Clayton Geiger and Cooper Fox. Unfortunately it was followed by two goals from Midale.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The second period saw both sides earn a single goal 鈥 the PureChem Cougars鈥 coming off the stick of Jordan Fox assisted by Nathan Heck and Billy Greenwood.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the third the Mustangs took an early lead with a goal scored 30 seconds in; but the Cougars fought back with Cooper Fox earning a goal off Ben Johnstone and Tyler Fleck. It wasn鈥檛 enough though as the Mustangs earned the 4-3 win over the PureChem Cougars.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The Carnduff Red Devils are currently leading the league with 35 points; the Redvers Rockets trail in second with 33 points; the Wawota Flyers are sitting in third with 30 points; Bienfait Coalers and Yellow Grass Wheat Kings are tied at 28 points each; the Midale Mustangs currently hold 22 points; the Oxbow Huskies are sitting with 20 points; while the Carlyle PureChem Cougars are looking like they鈥檝e earned the final playoff spot with 7 points over Arcola/Kisbey Combines鈥 2 points.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Top scorers in the league are Taysen Holt, Oxbow 鈥 56 points; Derek Cooney, Oxbow 鈥 54 points; Matt Audette, Carnduff 鈥 48 points; Devin Cobbold, Yellow Grass 鈥 44 points; Jordon Miller, Redvers 鈥 41 points; Wyatt Garagan, Bienfait 鈥 38 points; Payden Benning, Bienfait and Brandon Trask, Carnduff 鈥 36 points; Brycen Odgers, Oxbow 鈥 35 points; and Drew Hoff, Redvers 鈥 34 points.
