MOOSE JAW - This past weekend, the Estevan Coldwell Banker Choice Real Estate U12 Chargers football team won their league championship, defeating the Moose Jaw Spartans by a score 27-0. Two of their players live in Carlyle and the Observer had the opportunity to talk to their coach Matt Schell.

Schell, who is from Lampman, has coached the team the past three years and this year they added James Haagsman from Estevan as their defensive co-ordinator. The Chargers play in a four-team league and finished the regular season with a 5-1 record. They have 25 male and female players, residing in towns including Carlyle, Bienfait, Hitchcock, Oxbow and Carnduff, and of course Estevan. It is nine-man football.

Said Schell: “Our team really gelled this year and the two Carlyle players contributed to our success. Taya is a rock-star offensive lineman and Nash a super shutdown cornerback. I was very happy to have them on the team.”

Two other players from Carlyle played on the Estevan Lions Club U14 Oilers team, which is 12-man. While they didn’t win their league, both Hayden Miller and Liam Thompson thoroughly enjoyed their season.
