Bill Beahm enjoys golfing at one of the best courses around

More time to golf now that retired

A retired Bill Beahm enjoys a round or two of golf every week now that he has some free time.

After working on the rigs in the oilpatch for five years, he then found his lifelong career as a coal miner for the next 42 years in the Estevan/Bienfait area.

Beahm and his family moved to Kenosee Lake in 2014, but still drove back and forth to Estevan for a couple of those years, and then finally retired in 2017.

Beahm says he golfs routinely three times a week. He plays with a regular group Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“We get a lot of family up here stopping in to visit,” says Beahm, explaining why he doesn’t take part in any of the tournaments.

Beahm was a late bloomer in the golfing world, as he says he only took up the sport at age 45.

“I had to as I couldn’t do anything else,” explains Beahm. “I suffered a severe injury playing ball when I was 37 and I couldn’t do anything else, so at 45, I had to start doing something.”

“I took up golf.”

Beahm says he was lucky enough to have two hole-in-one shots.

The first one was in 2005 at the Minot Country Club and the second one was at Mainprize Golf Course in 2007.

“I haven’t had one since.”

“Many a times ,I’ve come close but close don’t count,” laughs Beahm.

Lots of golfers have yet to score a hole-in-one but Beahm says he’d gladly trade those in to par a course.

“I’ve never parred a course,” explains Beahm and adds “a hole in one means you’re lucky once but to par a course means I’d had to be lucky for an entire day.”

“I love golf,” says Beahm. “It’s a great pastime.”

“It’s great exercise and the people, especially here at Kenosee, are just so great. I never met anyone I didn’t like.”

Beahm jokes that he heard there are people there who aren’t nice but he’s never met them.

“Before I retired I used to golf an average of 15 to 20 different courses a year,” explains Beahm. “The guys I golfed with used to move around and try different courses and it was fine. I’ve tried out golf courses when we holidayed in Phoenix.”

“When I retired we had to settle down to one or two courses.”

“We got a pretty nice course here, nothing compares to here,” Beahm says. “This one (Kenosee) is right up there with the best of them all.”
