Big win for PureChem Cougars

The Bienfait Coalers visited the Carlyle arena on Sunday, Jan. 21. As the regular season is coming to a close it was imperative for the PureChem Cougars to earn a few extra points with the Arcola/Kisbey Combines nipping at their heels.

                The Bienfait Coalers visited the Carlyle arena on Sunday, Jan. 21. As the regular season is coming to a close it was imperative for the PureChem Cougars to earn a few extra points with the Arcola/Kisbey Combines nipping at their heels. Heading into playoffs only the top eight out of the nine teams in the league will have a chance to chase The Lincoln Trophy.

                The Coalers earned a quick goal three minutes into the game, but the PureChem Cougars would go on to control the rest of the action.

                Brett Turgeon and Tyler Fleck each earned unassisted goals in the first which left the PureChem Cougars ahead 2-1 after the first.

                Not letting up the PureChem Cougars controlled the second period with Josh Hohn in net stopping any of the Coalers’ attempts, while Blair Toms scored off assists by Kelly Currie and Ben Johnstone and Turgeon rang in his second of the night off an assist by Mark Shaw.

                Although not a comfortable lead heading into the third period, the PureChem Cougars were up 4-1.

                The Coalers were able to make a tough shot over a diving defenseman high to the goalie’s stick side resulting in a third period goal bringing the score to a 4-2 spread. The PureChem Cougars had more gas in the tank and pushed back quickly with Cooper Fox scoring a goal one minute after the Coalers’ rang theirs in. Fox was assisted by Kelly Currie and Tyler Fleck. Ben Johnstone flew down the ice to cap off the PureChem Cougars’ night off an assist by Brett Turgeon and Blair Toms scoring the sixth and final goal of the night.

                Ending in a 6-2 win over the Coalers, the PureChem Cougars were able to celebrate their win and create a three point lead over the Arcola/Kisbey Combines in points standings for playoffs.

                The next action for the Carlyle PureChem Cougars is at home against Redvers on Tuesday, Jan. 30, followed by their last regular season home game on Friday, Feb. 2, against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines.

                The Carnduff Red Devils are in first (33 points); the Redvers Rockets are in second (28 points); the Wawota Flyers are in second (26 points); the Bienfait Coalers and Yellow Grass Wheat Kings are tied in points (22 points each), with Bienfait leading with 11 wins versus Yellow Grass’ 10 wins; the Midale Mustangs follow (18 points); the Oxbow Huskies are behind them (16 points); the Carlyle PureChem Cougars are hanging onto their eighth place (5 points); while the Arcola/Kisbey Combines are currently in ninth (2 points).
