Beavers battle for final playoff spot

The Weyburn Beavers continued their battle for the third and final playoff spot in the Western Major Baseball League's Eastern Division with a critical three-game series against the team chasing Weyburn: the Yorkton Cardinals.

The Weyburn Beavers continued their battle for the third and final playoff spot in the Western Major Baseball League's Eastern Division with a critical three-game series against the team chasing Weyburn: the Yorkton Cardinals.Every player in Weyburn's starting line-up scored at least once as the Beavers routed Yorkton 16-1 on July 21 to restore Weyburn's one-game lead over Yorkton in the East Division. Weyburn scored six times in the first inning, and tacked on seven more in the third, ending any suspense in the pivotal match-up. Kilby Perdomo had a two-run home run among his four runs batted in. Erik Scott also had a two-run homer. Derek Wallace had five hits and three runs batted in for Weyburn. Alex Gale allowed only a run and four hits in seven innings to get the win. The Beavers' record, after the game on July 21, was 14-24. Yorkton is 12-24.Yorkton defeated Weyburn 9-5 in Yorkton on July 19. Grant Malm had a couple of runs batted in for the Beavers. Weyburn hosted Yorkton again on July 22. (Results not available at press time).The game on July 22 capped a stretch of seven games in eight days for the Beavers. They dropped a pair of home games with the East Division-leading Regina Red Sox: 11-8 on July 15 and 20-9 on July 16. The Red Sox scored 11 times in the fifth inning in the game on July 16.Then Weyburn split two road games with the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets: a 6-2 win July 17 and a 13-12, extra inning loss on July 18. Jesse Elam pitched a complete game seven-hitter for Weyburn in the first game with Saskatoon.Weyburn led 6-0 in the second inning and 12-7 in the eighth inning on July 18, but Saskatoon rallied to force extra innings, and the Yellow Jackets won the game in the bottom of the 11th.Weyburn has three games left in the regular season. They visit Regina on July 25. And then they will finish the season with home games against Saskatoon on July 27 and 28. Both games start at 7 p.m.
