Carlyle Town Council met on Wednesday, Feb. 12, to discuss topics pertaining to the community.
Workers' compensation regarding amateur sports instructors and coaches
In the past The Workers' Compensation Act had automatically included amateur sports instructors and coaches, but this is no longer the case. The 2013 version of The Workers' Compensation Act was amended and the policy now requires these individuals to apply for coverage.
Currently, unless it has been applied for, amateur sports instructors and coaches do not have coverage of work related injuries.
For more information contact the Town Office regarding this matter.
Support for National Strategy for Dementia
Council members passed a resolution to support Bill C-356, An Act respecting a National Strategy for Dementia, which is being put forth by MP Claude Gravelle Nickel Belt. Alzheimers' disease and other forms of dementia affect over 500,000 Canadians currently and it is reported that estimated projections show 1.1 million will be affected within a generation.
Cost to the health care system will increase dramatically because of this, in addition to other financial challenges.
Canada currently does not have a national dementia strategy, but Belt's legislation hopes to work on developing strategies within primary health care, while investing in research and providing support to caregivers.
Correspondence with Chamber of Commerce
Councillors also conversed about a request from Martin Tourand of the Carlyle Chamber of Commerce. The request regarded council's thoughts on opening a new hall, while explicitly stating they were not looking for money just the council's opinion.
After deliberating, council members agreed they did not have enough information to make their decision. The size of the building, where it would be built, and what happens to the old hall, were some of their unanswered questions the councillors would need to know before making a decision as to where they stood.
They have, therefore, decided not to commit to anything at present, though they did infer it was not a top priority for the town and a quality day care centre is something they would rather see the community work towards currently.
General discussion
Discussion included the need to change the flags on the flag poles outside of the Civic Centre. Town workers have attempted to do so three times, but each time they have rented a lift it has broken and the workers have been unable to change the flags.
A building permit for Crescent Point was approved regarding a temporary structure to be built on their lot.
Red Coat Mutual Aid was discussed and the town approved their 2014 requisition of $3,924.
