The YWCA of Regina holds Women of Distinction Awards every year. Focused on bringing "honours to the exceptional contributions of women who positively impact their community," this awards gala was held at the beginning of May. For the 2012 year 44 women were nominated in 12 categories. (YWCA Regina website)
These categories varied greatly including The Arts, Community Leadership and Enhancement, Contribution to a Rural Community, Cultural Heritage, Education and Mentorship, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Science Technology and Environment, Leadership and Management, Circle of Friends, Wellness Recreation and Healthy Living, Young Woman of Promise, and Lifetime Achievement.
This year two women of our community were both nominated for the award that recognizes Contribution to a Rural Community. Women nominated for this distinction are "living and working in southern Saskatchewan who makes significant contributions to the betterment of rural life. She has shown her dedication by creating solutions, participating in enriching lives or adapting programs to meet community needs." (YWCA Regina website)
Sheila Sim and Roxanne Appell were the two women nominated for the award.
Sim works at the Arcola Family Health Centre, something that she helped to reopen in 2010 after it had been closed down due to lack of interest from doctors to remain in the area.
Roxanne Appell works at the White Bear Education Complex and operates a rescue for both dogs and horses west of Wawota.
Both women have made contributions to the community in many ways. They are positive role models who have achieved success and have given back to their communities.
May 3, 2012, was the Awards Gala event for the women nominated. This was a night of praise for all of the nominees and when the Women of Distinction Awards were given out. Sim and Appell may not have won, but to be nominated and recognized in all of southern Saskatchewan for their contributions to community is a great compliment. The community is proud to have them working in the area.
