Veterans of White Bear First Nations, James A. McArthur and George Sparvier, were the Colour Guard who entered the school gym marking the beginning of the Remembrance Day ceremony.

On Friday, Nov. 8, White Bear Education Complex hosted a Remembrance Day ceremony to honour the soldiers and veterans who fought for the country.

Sheri McArthur-Cappo welcomed the students and community members to the school gymnasium where the ceremony was held, explaining why it is important for them to continue to commemorate those who have fought.

"We honour our veterans," McArthur-Cappo said. "These men went to war and fought for us. They fought for the great country of Canada. We get to speak what we want to speak. We can vote and we have freedoms. We're privileged in Canada because in some countries you can't."

Elder Nora Paul proceeded to say a prayer marking the beginning of the ceremony.

As the Flag Song and Veteran Honour Song were played by Wooden Face veterans James A. McArthur and George Spravier entered the gym carrying the flag staff and Canadian flag. After the two veterans walked around the gym, they stood at the front of the gym as the Victory Song was played. All were encouraged to dance at this time.

"This is our culture, so dance," McArthur-Cappo stated.

A one-minute of silence was then held, followed by the laying of wreaths at the front of the gym. Relatives of those who served were invited to lay the wreaths, each one shaking hands with the veterans thanking them for what they have done for future generations.

As the ceremony concluded each of the students and community members in attendance left, stopping to thank the veterans and shake their hands. From the youngest to the eldest, all participated in honouring soldiers and veterans who fought for the country protecting freedoms.
