White Bear Education Centre [WBEC] was one of the few schools province-wide that waited and was able to have a regular prom night for the students completing their final school year.

The perfect summer evening went very smoothly, with certain precautions in place, providing a safe and secure night of appreciation for the students.

Noticeably upon entry, each person was provided a mask and temperatures were taken; a list of precautions was in full sight for reading before entering the auditorium. The school auditorium was very nicely decorated with tables set up for the families of the graduates, and seating was spaced out to provide the physical distancing for those attending to honour the students.

The ceremony began at 5 p.m. with WBEC principal Sheri McArthur as master of ceremonies. She called on Angie McArthur to give the prayer to the students and attendees. The grads entered the auditorium to the sound of the drum group and were introduced along with their chosen escorts.

This year’s 2020 graduates were Da Yonna Lonechild, Daniel Graham, Lara Redstar, Sharissa Delorme and Cassidy Kinistino.

The playing of the chosen graduation song Hall of Fame by The Script was next, followed by a toast to the parents, a toast to the teachers and three speeches, each of which were delivered by one of the five graduates.

The Student Scholastic Award presentations were next, as they were included in the grad ceremony, because they were postponed from an earlier date due to the pandemic, and were followed by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Medallions presentation.

McArthur then called upon guest speaker Shana Pasapa, who gave an inspiring heartfelt speech to the grads and audience, speaking of the importance of believing in yourself and sending home the message to do what you want to achieve, not what others would like to see you do. Pasapa grew up at WhiteBear First Nations and graduated from the WBEC in 2005.

The final part of the evening’s program included presentations and gifts, along with congratulations from the White Bear First Nations chief and counsellors. Each student then received an Eagle Feather that had been blessed and a Star Blanket before McArthur gave the graduating students a final thank-you. A barbeque was held after for the grads, their families and all those attending.
