Construction on the outdoor pool at the Weyburn Leisure Centre has been going like crazy, according to Mathew Warren, leisure services director for the City of Weyburn. We are currently on schedule for construction at the outdoor pool. The plan is to have the grand opening on July 1 in conjunction with the Citys Canada Day celebrations, explained Warren. The concrete for the deep and shallow ends (of the pool) have been poured and currently they are working on the zero-beach entry aspect. Soon crews will be pouring some piles to get ready for the installation of the speed slide. After a brief delay of the construction that occurred in September of last year, after the older structure had been demolished, warmer weather in October and November allowed crews to get caught up. Then during the winter months they worked on the mechanical room. Now that construction crews are finishing all the concrete pouring off by working lots and lots of hours, we have no concerns about getting it open by July 1, said Warren. He added that crews hope to start some landscaping this year too, however complete landscaping might not be done for a couple of years. Our priority this year was getting the new outdoor pool functional, then in the next two years we will develop the landscaping around the new facility. Until the outdoor pool is ready to be opened, the indoor pool at the Leisure Centre will remain open. Unlike previous years, there will be a direct transition from the indoor pool use to the outdoor pool use, instead of a one-week break in between.Aspects of the new outdoor pool include the speed slide, moving the portable rock-climbing wall outside, the zero-beach entry tot pool, five lanes of swimming, and a one-metre and a three-metre diving board. As for the Don Mitchell Paddling Pool, it will open on Monday, June 14, with hours of operation from 1 to 5 p.m. for most of June. Then from June 28 to August 28, the paddling pool will be open Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.In the same area is the Young Fellows Spray Park, which will be open as of Saturday, May 22, weather permitting. This area will be open during the day, featuring a hand sensor that turns the water on, and the water will be shut off at 9 p.m.In other city facilities, Warren noted that the Heritage Village will be opening on Tuesday, May 25, for its season. The city has hired their students and are ready to start taking school tours. Later in the summer the city will be organizing their annual Heritage Daze. The Leisure Department is also busy with construction at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena and Crescent Point Place as well as at the pool. There is so much happening for infrastructure at city leisure facilities right now, said Warren. But it is the right time for us to do all this.
